Five Things You Didn’t Know About Your Teeth

Teeth help us eat, smile, and speak.  Get to know them a little more, so that  you can take better care of them. They  will keep you smiling and confident long  into the future.

01. Your teeth are uniquely yours, like your fingerprint. This is why dental records are sometimes used to identify human remains.

02. About a third of each tooth is buried under the gums. Keeping your gums healthy is as important as caring for your teeth.

03. Tooth enamel is the hardest part of the body. It’s mostly made of calcium and phosphate, like bones, but is even stronger, and protects the rest of the tooth.

04. Your mouth is home to millions of bacteria comprising 200 to 300 varieties. Some convert sugar and other carbohydrates into acids, which eat away at your teeth.

05. Saliva is important to your overall health; you make 10,000 gallons of it during your lifetime. Saliva makes food easier to swallow and jumpstarts digestion. It washes away food particles from the teeth and neutralizes the acids that cause tooth damage and decay.
