Dental crowns are a common restorative procedure designed to protect and strengthen a damaged or decayed tooth. At Chesterland Family Dental Care, Drs. Brianne Fratantonio, Nicholas R. Fratantonio, Trudy Amstadt, and Jeff Budrys provide expert care in dental crowns, ensuring that your tooth looks natural and functions properly. Whether you need a crown due to decay, a fracture, or after a root canal, we will guide you through the process to restore your smile with precision and care.
Dental crowns are specialized caps that cover and shield a weak or damaged tooth. They are designed to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance. While crowns can be crafted from several different materials, porcelain or ceramic is the most popular material dentists use today.
Having a crown placed typically requires two visits to your local dentist’s office. When you arrive for your initial visit, a dentist will prepare your tooth by removing any existing decay before shaping the tooth so that the crown will have a proper fit. Next, an impression of the tooth will be created so that your crown can be crafted to match the appearance of the natural tooth. Following your first visit, you will receive a temporary crown from your dentist, which you will wear while the permanent crown is being made. The temporary crown is taken out during your second appointment, and the permanent crown is expertly fitted and cemented in place.
Getting a dental crown usually takes about two weeks, with each visit lasting around 60 to 90 minutes. Your initial visit will involve tooth preparation and the creation of necessary impressions. Your follow-up visit will be when your permanent crown is placed. Your dentist will ensure that the crown fits perfectly and that you are comfortable with the result.
Having a crown placed should not be painful. Most dentists utilize local anesthesia around the treatment area, ensuring that you feel no discomfort during the procedure. After the anesthesia wears off, you may experience mild sensitivity, but this usually subsides within a few days.
Dental crowns are designed to be durable and can last 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care. You can increase the longevity of your crown by practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding hard foods, and scheduling routine examinations with your dentist.
Caring for your new dental crown is similar to caring for your natural teeth. Brush twice, floss daily, and visit Chesterland Family Dental Care for regular cleanings and exams. Your dentist will also provide you with specific care instructions to ensure the longevity of your crown.
